Tracking is the tracking and analysis of the movement of an user on the Internet within a closed website or across websites. The tracking provides information about the website from which the target page was accessed, which advertising element it has selected and which actions are carried out on the advertised website (e.g. purchase, download, etc.). Tracking is therefore an important tool for monitoring success in online marketing.

Data acquisition

Furthermore, the following metrics can be recorded through professional tracking:

  • How the usability or user friendliness of the site is set up
  • Which backlinks the user used to come to the site
  • How long users stay on the page and which pages are clicked on most often
  • Whether users feel encouraged to carry out actions on the site (e.g. registration for the newsletter, following on social media, etc.)

Use in online marketing

Usability test

With the data obtained, the webmaster can eliminate the weak points of the page or expand good areas further in order to further improve usability. Marketing strategies can also be refined precisely and adapted for better results.

Affiliate programs

Tracking is especially necessary for affiliate programs, e.g. to be able to assign exactly from which affiliate partner the user was directed to the page in order to assign the commissions.
