The browser, also known as a web browser, is based on the English word "to browse" and means something like "rummage" or "browse". A browser is a computer program for the graphic representation of the Internet (World Wide Web or WWW) or generally of documents, files, and other programs. A browser enables the user to call up, display, and view websites using any hyperlinks.

From the technical point of view, the web browser is a web client program that makes contact with a web server and finally returns in form of HTML pages. The communication channel used here is mostly HTTP, but various file types such as HTML, XML, JPEG, and GIF can also be executed. As soon as small programs like Java are executed, users have the option to access graphics, music, radio, and films. There are also other communication tools available to the user, such as bookmarks, favorites, navigation history and buttons, and other search engines.

Browsers are also used on smartphones and tablets to surf the Web. These programs may differ from the visualization of the desktop but work the same way.

There are different web browsers on the market. The largest browsers like to count on:

  • Apple Safari
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Opera web browser
